I have often pondered the extent to which social media truly facilitates genuine human connection beyond the virtual realm.Where does the uniqueness of the individual reside amidst the anonymous masses of "followers"? How is it possible to not blend into the whole and emerge with one's own voice?
For some time now, I have been following Deborah Apeloig and her Tikun Talks project on social media, which brings light and hope to a world where the condition of being an empathetic and sensitive human being often fades into the stupor of the shadows of lovelessness and hatred among humans.
With a deep interest in her work, which resonates with me in both its content and delivery, I decided to reach out to her via Instagram, introducing myself, my work, and my desire to connect with her during a brief stay in Miami.
With a mix of anticipation and uncertainty, I awaited her response, unsure if it would ever arrive.
To my surprise, not only did she respond, but she also went out of her way to find that precious "little place" where we could meet, share stories, and personal experiences. In a "looking into each other's eyes" conversation, we talked about family, faith, and the themes that drive us in the "search for meaning" in this mysterious experience that is life.
Deborah is a life-filled human being who radiates energy, a desire to "do," and who connects me to the things that matter to me. Leaving a mark, telling stories, rescuing the beauty in the good that we can do for each other, and living the path of life with humility. Everything becomes a great learning experience if we are willing for it to be so, learning from and with each other.
Thank you, Deborah, for giving yourself and opening up with generosity for such a lovely encounter.
